For example, Mitsurugi claims his blade is better than the gun, so his ending is against a renown hunter and you have to dodge bullets until you can reach the hunter and slice him. They were great, interactive, and you could get different endings based on your actions. I’m used to the FANTASTIC endings in the first Soul Edge (Soul Calibur I). You will sometimes be able to have a partner that you can tag with to help with the hairy fights. This is a nice little bonus to the game as are the challenges of fighting four computer bots vs your one character. What does set the Story Mode apart from the Arcade mode is that everything is pretty random and you keep all of your stats and specifications, armor, and weapons you choose in your Character Creation during this mode. Seems that they kept the same increasing difficulty through the Story Mode so it’s a pretty easy breeze and quick to unlock items and weapons for your character customization. The reasoning for dubbing it Arcade-Lite is due to the complexity of the Arcade mode starts hitting about Stage 6. The difficulty on Normal is pretty easy and you’ll find yourself plowing through this without a lot of heartache. One note to keep in mind, the more you play any character including the Player-Made Characters, in any mode, you further unlock their “style” which will present you with more moves and abilities. It’s 5 stages where a story unfolds with all of your characters including generic cut scenes that go accordingly with your Create-A-Player characters based on their alignment (Good/Evil/None). I’ve been mainly focusing on the Story Mode. Let’s break it down further and have a look at: Single Player! Single Player modes include: Arcade, Story Mode, Training, & Tower of Lost Souls Characters flow really well in battle, and the multiple game modes are fun. They did a great job polishing all the graphics and final looks of the game. The battles were fluid, the weapons were painful upon impact, and the challenge is still border line difficult/frustration depending on the level and game mode you’re playing. It was fun though! Something I didn’t feel in SC III. The mechanics were changed enough to present a challenge, and some of my favorite combos were changed slightly, so it took some readjusting to get the hang of it. I snagged the game, unwrapped the cellophane, opened the case which revealed that new game smell (almost as good as the new car scent!), and loaded up! I decided to grab a couple of the favorite characters and take them for a spin. All in all, I’ve unlocked most of the characters (all but 3) and made a couple of characters varying in style… so here we go (After the break): I do have one complaint… as “commercial” as it is to include the Star Wars Galaxies and the Japanese comic book industry into the game… it was just really unnecessary. So, being jaded, I snagged SC IV mainly for the character creation when I heard about it, and it looked promising. The gameplay felt off and I couldn’t place my finger on it. Of the Soul Calibur series… my favorite has been SC II, and my LEAST favorite was SC III. This series is now entering it’s twelfth year (12 years!) of existence. Here we are with another edition of the Soul Calibur series. This will be updated a bit more as I play further into it, but I can at least spout off some first impressions at this point! I was able to log a couple hours into the game and sampled around with bit here and a bit there.
